EEDS’ 4th of July Parade is Almost Here!

Can you believe that it almost July 4th? We certainly can’t!  But we have been practicing hard, and we are ready! We would love it if you could join us at the parade – it starts at 2 PM on Saturday, July 4th on Central street in Evanston, and all are welcome. Show your support and RSVP on Facebook!

The theme of our parade this year, based on the official Evanston 4th of July theme, is “Four Seasons of Evanston’s Trees.” Thanks to our successful Kickstarter we are really able to make this theme a reality! We have also been working very hard to perfect our performance. Over the past 2 weeks we held 2 open rehearsals, where both dancers and percussionists rehearsed together. We are so excited for the 4th and can’t wait to share pictures of our final parade with you!

Final Call to Support EEDS’ Kickstarter!

Thank you to all our friends and supporters who have contributed to and shared our 4th of July Parade Kickstarter so far! There are only 5 days to go, and a lot of work left to do to reach our goal. If we do not raise $2,300 we don’t receive any of the contributions. You can contribute any amount, and receive some pretty cool EEDS swag, too! Please also share our Kickstarter link on social media if you can: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/983784316/2015-evanston-escola-de-samba-4th-of-july-parade

Your donations go toward parade materials, costumes for the dancers and percussionists, payment for the teachers, as well as scholarships for members who can’t afford full-priced summer-session classes. You can also be a part of EEDS by joining us for percussion classes at 4048 West Armitage, Chicago, IL every Wednesday night from 7-8:30. All are welcome to join these drop-in classes, and you can then play in the parade! Hope to see you there, and thanks again for your support!

September Events Recap

September has been a busy month for EEDS, this week we hosted a special teacher, Derek Wright from Los Angeles. Derek taught the bateria some Maracatu, from the Northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco, and an Afoxé rhythm (secular music based on sacred Candomblé rhythms from northeastern Brazil). It was a lot of fun – and big thanks to Derek for helping add some new patterns and styles to our repertoire!

Earlier in the month, we performed an outdoor samba concert and parade at Evanston Streets Alive, an outdoor block party that took over Main street. It was a lot of fun to parade for a crowd, and we think the crowd enjoyed themselves, too. We have some more notable events on the horizon including a percussion workshop with Jimmy Biala on Wednesday, October 1st. You can find more information on our Facebook event page – look forward to seeing you there.

Check out the official EEDS 4th of July 2014 video

Maybe you have already seen this video on our Facebook Page, but we are more than happy to share it again! EEDS Videographer Michael Rhee produced this gorgeous video of our 2014 4th of July Parade. Enjoy (and be sure to watch in HD!) !

It’s Almost Parade Time!

The dancers and percussionists have been practicing furiously, while the carnavalescos have been crafting float decor in samba central. With only a few days to go, we’re almost ready for the 4th. This is sure to be our best and biggest EEDS parade ever, with not one, but TWO floats. Thanks to everyone who has helped out to make this parade a reality, we couldn’t have done it without you! We can’t wait to see you at the 4th of July parade at 2PM on Central Street in Evanston! Don’t forget to learn the lyrics to our enredo/theme song so you can sing along!

Evanston Escola de Samba’s 2013 4th of July Parade was a great success. Everyone did a fabulous job – and now we have the photographs and videos to show for it! Check out both of our photo albums on Facebook for some amazing pictures. However the 4th of July parade is just the beginning for EEDS, and we would love for you to join us for these upcoming events and classes.

We are having a music-filled 10th anniversary party for EEDS on Friday, July 26th from 7 to 10 PM and you are all invited, more details to follow shortly.

Moreover, if you had a great time participating in or watching the 4th of July Parade stay tuned for our Fall dance and percussion class offerings, which will start in September. Keep watching our Facebook page and blog for more updates, photos and videos! Samba on!
